Printmakers around the world have come together to make a difference in the lives of the people of Japan who have been affected by the tsunami and earthquake of 2011. Sixty artists from the USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the UK, France, Poland, India, Australia and South Africa have donated their time and talent to create images to celebrate the strength, tenacity and beauty of Japan. The exclusive portfolios have been shown in several venues in the USA as well as in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Tthe exhibition is back in Johannesburg, this time at Vélo Gallery, Braamfontein (corner Juta and Melle Streets), from 25 November 2011 to mid-January 2012. My work, above, is entitled "Love and Hope for Japan from South Africa." The central figures are koi fish and a rising sun with the character 愛 ("ai" = "love") in the middle. Koi is one of the most popular Japanese animals in the world. There is also a legend that an aspiring koi transforms itself into a dragon when it succeeds in swimming up waterfalls. Thus, it is my hope for Japan's quick and successful recovery. The surrounding patter is a Ndebele motif, signifying South Africa. The linocut print (edition of 60) is the fruit of collaboration with Kalle Pihlajasaari (block cutter) and Mark Sandham (printer). 写真の作品は「Love and Hope for Japan from South Africa」という題のリノカット。
